The shrub was given the name ninebark because it was said to have nine layers of bark. Native to wetlands, its drooping branches provide high quality aquatic cover when planted on
stream banks. With it’s attractive clusters of whitish flowers, it is commonly used as an ornamental. Fruits and seeds are highly sought by songbirds and grouse. Special value for bees.
A great native alternative to exotic invasive pests plants such as Japanese barberry or non-native honeysuckles.
